MALE:
In the ancient Rome the kind of clothes
someone wore was not just important for
covering the body or defending it from
coldness, it represented a Status symbol.
The most common piece of clothing was
the Toga (1).

It was mainly made of wool or linen, always white and draped around the body.
Only important peolple (patrizi) could wear them because the decorations that caracterized it symbolised power. It represented the passage between childhood and adulthood. However, it was uncomfortable. As soon as possible they replaced it with the Tunica (2).

The Tunica was knee-length and
tight around the waist thanks to a belt. With cold weather
they usually wore a
cape over the Tunica (3).

FEMALE
The feminine version of the Tunica was the Stola (4). A long dress without sleeves that they wore over the Tunica.
Female hairstyles were very scenic and elaborated (5).
